Wildlife Wonders: Myer’s Christmas Windows Bring Australia Zoo to Life!

Myer - Irwin Christmas 2024

by Edwina Olver

Visiting Myer’s iconic Christmas Windows has been a long-held Christmas tradition for many Australian families.

When I was a little girl, every year without fail my parents would take me into Bourke St, Melbourne to see which enchanting tale was in store, and I’d look on with glee and wonder. I remember when the windows were so popular that there would often be lines snaking around the corner past the post office, and I’d have to jump on my dad’s shoulders to get a glimpse of the show whilst buskers played music around us.

For me, it wasn’t about the fact that it was at Myer, rather, it was about the wonder that I felt to experience something magical with my family at Christmas time. And that’s the beauty – for more than 69 years, Myer has brought to life a creation, a story and a reason for families to come together to forge new memories that spark Christmas joy. They have perpetuated a beautiful family Christmas tradition, which I’ll continue to honour with my children.

This year, Myer has collaborated with Australia Zoo. An unlikely combination for a Christmas spectacle but throw in some cute kangaroos and Australia’s much-loved trio – the Irwins, who bring a legacy of wildlife conservation, and you’ve got something unique. Does it compare with the likes of past displays such as Charles Dickens: A Christmas Carol (2000) or Dr Seuss: How the Grinch stole Christmas (2003)? I don’t know – but that’s the whole point, these windows are a reason for families to leave the comfort of their home, jump on a train, and make their way into town to marvel at something that evokes a Christmas spirit. And maybe make a purchase or two while they’re at it.
